She'd thought she'd just spend another night in, studying and watching TV and being glad she's not outside in the cold. But here she is, outside in the cold, but the more bizarre aspect is the fact that she's lacing a pair of ice skates onto her feet after being picked up by Steve Harrington, of all people. And judging by their earlier conversation, she can only assume that this is, in fact, a date, no matter how much she's trying to keep her expectations at rock bottom. She doesn't want to set herself up for disappointment; that's why she generally doesn't date in the first place.
Well, at least the fact that they'll be outside for most of the time means that she hadn't wasted any time trying to look pretty, avoiding a dress or skirt and instead dressing for warmth in jeans, a heavy sweater, and a long wool coat. Their conversation in the car had been light and pleasant, with her pointedly avoiding talking about the exchange that had led to them making this date to begin with. But now that she's got the skates laced up and she sort of needs to cling to him to make sure she doesn't royally screw up her ankles, it's going to be a little harder to be avoidant.
