[It's no secret that Steve Harrington is willing to toss himself into danger if that means it's going to save someone he cares about. He's done that way before MJ fell into the picture and now she's one of the people he would die to protect. For now, Steve's relieved that MJ has yet to figure out anything about the darkness that consumes the town of Hawkins.
